Arriva plc (ARI) is a British-based international public transport operator, headquartered in Sunderland. It has bus and/or rail operations in Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and the United Kingdom. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index.
History
The company grew out the Cowie motor retail business which was founded in 1938 and gradually bought various UK bus companies from 1980 onwards. It is the third largest bus operator in the UK after First and Stagecoach and has become one of the big five operators that have come to dominate the UK bus market since deregulation, the others being First Group (the largest), Stagecoach, Go-Ahead and National Express. The Arriva brand was introduced on its numerous bus operations in 1997. Along with the other major bus groups, Arriva also moved into rail operations following railway privatisation. Also in 1997, Arriva made its first move into the continental European market with the acquisition of Danish firm Unibus Holdings.
As well as public transport operations Arriva previously ran a large UK-wide vehicle rental business, but this was sold for £96 million to Northgate, an existing rental business, in 2005. It disposed of its original motor retail division in 2003.
The company runs a bus and coach distribution business in the UK called Arriva Bus and Coach.
Livery
In the main, for bus and rail operations, Arriva uses a uniform corporate livery. The livery features an aquamarine base colour with a Cotswold Stone coloured semi-circle on the upper front section, outlined by a white stripe. A thin yellow stripe runs around the base of the vehicle, and the same yellow is used for any lettering on the vehicle, although some vehicles have lettering in the same light green as their logo.
Various route branding schemes see the liberal application of basic colours and wording to some routes, usually through the application of vinyl stickers.
Initially to comply with Transport for London's contract requirements, Arriva London adapted its livery by using red as the base colour, with extra red at the front to form "horns" instead of a full circle. Latterly, London vehicles have been painted all-over red, with almost no trace of the Arriva corporate livery.
