'''Benjamin Franklin Bache''' ([[1801]]-[[1881]]), a great-grandson of the Revolutionary War statesman and author [[Benjamin Franklin]], was a surgeon in the United States Navy before and during the [[American Civil War|Civil War]].
Bache graduated from [[Princeton University]] in [[1819]] and from the medical department of the [[University of Pennsylvania]] in [[1823]]. He became a [[surgeon]] in the [[United States Navy|Navy]] in [[1828]], and established a laboratory which supplied the Navy's medical department. From 1838 to 1841, he was a professor of natural science and religion at [[Kenyon College]] in [[Ohio]].
During the [[American Civil War|Civil War]], the laboratory was maintained at his expense. It provided supplies to the [[Union (American Civil War)|Union]] army.
