Berghaus 2233728 225578053 2008-07-14T11:49:43Z Spiderone 2895456 the German geographer Berghaus is an outdoor clothing and equipment manufacturer owned by the Pentland group based in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1966 by Peter Lockey and Gordon Davison, initially as an importer and distributor of outdoors products. However, in 1972 they began designing and manufacturing their own products, particularly backpacks and jackets. The product that established Berghaus as an innovator in outdoor performance clothing and equipment was the Cyclops backpack introduced in 1974, arguably one of the world’s first backpacks with an internal frame. It was in clothing that they really made their mark, as one of Europe's pioneer users of Gore-Tex. The name 'Berghaus' (loosely 'mountain hut' in German) was chosen to give the company credibility, as many of the best outdoors products in the 1960s were produced in Germany and Austria. This has however led to many people erroneously believing Berghaus to be a German company, illustrated by a series of sketches in the 1990s by UK comedian Harry Enfield featuring a stereotypical German student who is always wearing a Berghaus jacket. ==External links== *Official Website de:Berghaus Ltd. leisure-company-stub clothing-stub
