== History ==
The land in Coffee County was originally part of [[Dale County, Alabama|Dale County]], which was incorporated in 1824. Coffee County was formed from the western part of Dale County in 1841.

There were 19,837 housing units at an average density of 29 per square mile (11/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 77.11% [[Race (United States Census)|White]], 18.37% [[Race (United States Census)|Black]] or [[Race (United States Census)|African American]], 0.91% [[Race (United States Census)|Native American]], 0.95% [[Race (United States Census)|Asian]], 0.09% [[Race (United States Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.89% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.67% from two or more races. 2.71% of the population were [[Race (United States Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Race (United States Census)|Latino]] of any race.
There were 17,421 households out of which 32.10% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.40% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 12.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.30% were non-families. 24.90% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the county the population was spread out with 24.80% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.00 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $33,664, and the median income for a family was $39,664. Males had a median income of $31,468 versus $20,234 for females.
