Base excision repair is the mechanism by which [[nucleotide]] residues in [[DNA]] with chemically altered nitrogen bases can be removed and replaced. DNA glycosylase generates an apurinic or apyrimidinic site by removing the nitrogen base while leaving the sugar-phosphate backbone intact.
