"Did It Again" is the second single released from singer Kylie Minogue's 1997 album Impossible Princess. The single went gold in Australia reaching a peak of #14 in the UK and Australia.
Song information
The song was written by Minogue with Steve Anderson and David Seaman at a time when she was trying to develop as an artist. In 1995, her duet with Nick Cave "Where the Wild Roses Grow" had become a hit and the duo had enjoyed considerable pop and critical success including four ARIA Awards. She performed the song live with him at several rock festivals.
The video for "Did It Again" was released in late 1997. It was directed by Pedro Romanhi, and features 4 different Kylies ("Indie Kylie", "Cute Kylie", "Dance Kylie" and "Sex Kylie") fighting other each other in a catfight. The media speculated that Minogue was trying to become "Indie Kylie".
"Did It Again" was released just ahead of the release of the album in Australia. It had been intended to release the album under the name Impossible Princess throughout the world but the death of Diana, Princess of Wales led to a decision to rename the album in the United Kingdom. The renamed album called Kylie Minogue. Minogue was also upset at the death of her former lover Michael Hutchence in late 1997.
"Did It Again" reached #14 in Australia and #14 in the UK although it was not as successful as earlier Minogue singles. In Australia, the song also reached the Triple J Hottest 100, 1997 and appears on the Hottest 100 compilation along with songs by alternative musicians such as Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson.
The Impossible Princess album sold poorly in the UK leading to DeConstruction and Minogue going separate ways. In April 1998, she told Cosmopolitan in the UK: "I've tried to imagine what it will be like when no-one cares who I am any more and it's quite scary."
However, it was her most successful album in Australia during the 1990s achieving double platinum status and her Australian tour was a huge success selling out shows with extra dates being added. "Did It Again" contributed to her Australian success, winning airplay on rock and alternative stations such as Triple J, a rarity for Kylie, as her songs are usually pop. The Top 40 stations that had always played her material also played the song. "Did It Again" was eventually certified as a gold record by ARIA and spent 14 weeks in the ARIA Top 50.
