It is a subtropical and tropical family of deciduous small trees or shrubs native to northeast India, southern China and Burma. The plants have simple leaves with toothed margins and are attached alternately to stems. The flowers are in axillary umbels of 25-30 small regular flowers with a calyx of 5-7 united sepals, a corolla of 5-7 free or united petals, with 5-7 stamens, and sometimes 5-7 stamenoids in addition, and with 3 united carpels. The fruit is a late dehiscing capsule. This family is recognized by many taxonomists. However, the APG II system (2003) does not recognize such a family and leaves the genus Dipentodon unplaced as to family, or any other grouping. This represents a slight change from the APG system (1998), which did recognize the family but did not place it either. The family consists of a single species Dipentodon sinicus, occurring in China and neighbouring parts of Asia. The Cronquist system (1981) also recognized this family but placed it in the order Santalales in subclass Rosidae. The Takhtajan system (1997) placed the family in his Violales (= Malpighiales), while others recognised a Dipentodontales in Dilleniidae. Peter Stevens of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Website places the family in the order Huerteales.<ref>zh icon Wu, Lu, A.-M., Tang, Y.-C., Chen, Z.-D., & Li, D.-Z. (2002).
