the E in E=mc^2 stands for energy, not ergs (energy can be measured in any unit)

An '''erg''' is the unit of [[energy]] and [[mechanical work]] in the ''[[Centimetre gram second system of units|centimetre-gram-second]]'' (CGS) system of [[Units of measurement|unit]]s, symbol "erg". Its name is derived from the [[Greek language|Greek]] ''ergon'' meaning work <nowiki>[</nowiki>[[Oxford English Dictionary|OED]]<nowiki>]</nowiki>.
The erg is a small unit, equal to a force of one [[dyne]] exerted for a distance of one [[centimetre]]. In the CGS [[Unit of measurement#Base and derived units|base units]], it is equal to one [[gram]] centimetre-squared per [[second]] squared (g·cm²/s²). It is thus equal to [[1 E-7 J|1 × 10−7 joule]]s or 100 nanojoule (nJ) in [[SI]] units.
1 erg = 10−7 [[joule]]
1 erg = 6.2415 {{e|2}} GeV = 6.2415 {{e|11}} eV
1 joule = 107 erg
1 [[dyn]] cm = 1 erg.
