Augustín Farabundo Martí Rodríguez (May 5, 1893 – February 1, 1932) was a revolutionary in El Salvador.
Marti was born in Teotepeque, Departamento de La Libertad, El Salvador. Known as a Salvadorean Revolutionary and a Martyr for the Salvadorean Left, Farabundo Marti was born in a farmers environment. Early on, Marti realized the exploitation of the country's poor for the profit of the rich. Categorized as a hard working and intelligent young man, he decided to drop out of his Political Science and Jurisprudence degree in La Univesidad Del Salvador to fight for his community and nation.
In 1920 Farabundo Marti was arrested for taking part along with other Guatemalan students in a protest on La Universida Salvadorena, leading to his exile from the country. Marti took residence in Guatemala and Mexico until his return to El Salvador in 1925.
Coming back from exile, Marti was appointed as a representative to go to the New York conference of the Anti-Imperialist League of the Americas. Upon arriving in New York, he was once again arrested, but later freed.
Early on, he worked with Nicaraguan revolutionary leader Augusto César Sandino, although they broke over political disagreements.
Farabundo Marti, a communist, with the Socorro Rojo Internacional, led a communist alternative to the Red Cross. Serving as a representative of the Socorro Rojo Internacional, their goal was to help the poor and the underprivileged with a socialist ideology.
In December of 1930, Farabundo Marti was once again exiled, due to his popularity among the nation's poor and rumors of his incoming nomination for President the following year, at the height of the countries economic and social depression.
Returning to El Salvador once the new president was elected, Farabundo Marti, along with Alfonso Luna and Mario Zapata, decided to begin their Movement that was truncated by the military
They helped start a guerrilla revolt of indigenous campesinos. In the government reprisals, over thirty thousand indigenous people were killed in what became known as La Matanza.
