==Plot==
Nicole (Reese Witherspoon) is fairly innocent, but with a rebellious side particularly directed at her father (William Peterson). At a rave, she meets David (Mark Wahlberg) and is swept off her feet by his sweet, polite nature. Her father, seeming overprotective, does not like nor trust David. The closer Nicole gets to David, the more he objects. When David first meets the family everyone likes him except Nicole's father, but she doesn't care and most likely enjoys that fact. They go to a carnival together, and ride the roller coaster, where David gives Nicole her first sexual experience. Eventually, David sneaks into her room and Nicole then loses her virginity to him.
As they get closer, David's dark, possessive nature begins to emerge. When Nicole's father confronts David and warns him to stay away from Nicole, David beats himself and then shows Nicole the bruises and tells her that her father beat him. When he sees Nicole innocently hugging a male friend (Gary) at school, David attacks the boy and savagely beats him and accidentally hits Nicole and gives her a black eye. The violence then escalates. Nicole puts it behind her while her father can't make her see what's happening. Later Gary is walking home from school. David sees him and follows him through the forest. He tells him that he had a childhood in which if he broke a wall to get to the other side; if anything got in his way, he'd break it. He starts to chase Gary and eventually grabs hold of him, snaps his neck and leaves the body in the woods. He later rapes Nicole's best friend, Margo (Alyssa Milano). Nicole sees all of this happening through a window in his house. She misperceives as her best friend having consensual sex with her boyfriend. David continues to taunt Nicole's father by telling him that Nicole believes David and not her own father.
Nicole finally realized that David is a violent psychopath when she saw that sexual scene between Margo and David. She then breaks up with him, but he doesn't take the news well. Margo, at a loss of what to do about her bad entanglement with David's gang, comes to Nicole's house not knowing what her best friend had seen. She ends up rejected by Nicole in her time of need. David finds Margo driving away from Nicole's place and bothers her eventually making her pull over. David then insults her and starts to beat her (after getting her out of her car) because he believes that Margo told Nicole about their off night. In his psychopathic rage he tells Margo, "You better make this better or else I will hurt you", and then gives her a violent kiss. Margo is terrified seeing how she does not what to do about this horrific situation. She later goes to Nicole's house again revealing (to Nicole) that Gary was found dead in the woods, and Nicole immediately realizes who did it.
Earlier Nicole's dad found where David lives and trashes his place. David, coming home hours later to find his things completely ruined, knows who did this and wants revenge. He and four of his loyal friends arrive at Nicole's remote waterside home and terrorize her family and Margo. They kill an officer who arrives to help, cut the family dog's head off, and they tie up Nicole's parents. As David is once again sexually threatening Nicole, her father is able to free himself and, after a brief struggle, throws David through a second-story window who falls to his death on the ground below.
