The IIHF currently ranks them 3rd. The team is governed by the Finnish Ice Hockey Association. Finland is considered a member of the "Big Seven", along with Canada, Russia, the USA, Slovakia, Sweden, and the Czech Republic. Finland has a total of 52,597 registered players (1.0 % of its population). At the 1995 World championships Finland won a gold medal, beating Sweden in the final by a score of 4–1. In the 2006 Winter Olympics Finland won a silver medal, coming close to winning in the final but succumbing 3–2 to Sweden. Finland's goaltender Antero Niittymäki was named the MVP of the tournament (only 8 goals against in the whole tournament) and Teemu Selänne the best forward of the tournament. Doug Shedden coached the Finnish national men's ice hockey team in the 2007–08 season. Under Shedden, Finland won bronze. His assistant coach Jukka Jalonen will succeed him as the head coach in 2008. The national team has retired Jari Kurri's #17 jersey. It currently hangs in Hartwall Areena in Helsinki. Jari Kurri is currently the general manager of the team. ==2008 World Championship team== {| border="0" cellspacing="2" cellpadding="2" |- bgcolor=AAD0FF !width=40|Pos. !width=40|No. !width=250|Player !width=250|Team |- |style="text-align:center;"|GK |style="text-align:center;"|31 |Karri Rämö |USA Tampa Bay Lightning |- |style="text-align:center;"|GK |style="text-align:center;"|32 |Niklas Bäckström |USA Minnesota Wild |- |style="text-align:center;"|GK |style="text-align:center;"|35 |Petri Vehanen |FIN Lukko |- |style="text-align:center;"|D |style="text-align:center;"|4 |Ville Koistinen |USA Nashville Predators |- |style="text-align:center;"|D |style="text-align:center;"|6 |Ossi Väänänen |SWE Djurgårdens IF |- |style="text-align:center;"|D |style="text-align:center;"|7 |Antti-Jussi Niemi |SWE Frölunda HC |- |style="text-align:center;"|D |style="text-align:center;"|19 |Mikko Luoma |SWE HV71 |- |style="text-align:center;"|D |style="text-align:center;"|21 |Janne Niskala |USA Milwaukee Admirals |- |style="text-align:center;"|D |style="text-align:center;"|27 |Mikko Jokela |FIN Jokerit |- |style="text-align:center;"|D |style="text-align:center;"|33 |Anssi Salmela |FIN Tappara |- |style="text-align:center;"|D |style="text-align:center;"|40 |Sami Lepistö |USA Hershey Bears |- |style="text-align:center;"|F |style="text-align:center;"|8 |Teemu Selänne |USA Anaheim Ducks |- |style="text-align:center;"|F |style="text-align:center;"|9 |Mikko Koivu A |USA Minnesota Wild |- |style="text-align:center;"|F |style="text-align:center;"|10 |Esa Pirnes |SWE Färjestads BK |- |style="text-align:center;"|F |style="text-align:center;"|11 |Saku Koivu |CAN Montreal Canadiens |- |style="text-align:center;"|F |style="text-align:center;"|12 |Olli Jokinen A |USA Phoenix Coyotes |- |style="text-align:center;"|F |style="text-align:center;"|15 |Tuomo Ruutu |USA Carolina Hurricanes |- |style="text-align:center;"|F |style="text-align:center;"|16 |Ville Peltonen C |USA Florida Panthers |- |style="text-align:center;"|F |style="text-align:center;"|18 |Hannes Hyvönen |FIN Kärpät |- |style="text-align:center;"|F |style="text-align:center;"|20 |Sean Bergenheim |USA NY Islanders |- |style="text-align:center;"|F |style="text-align:center;"|23 |Riku Hahl |SWE Timrå IK |- |style="text-align:center;"|F |style="text-align:center;"|36 |Jussi Jokinen |USA Tampa Bay Lightning |- |style="text-align:center;"|F |style="text-align:center;"|37 |Mika Pyörälä |SWE Timrå IK |- |style="text-align:center;"|F |style="text-align:center;"|38 |Antti Pihlström |USA Milwaukee Admirals |- |style="text-align:center;"|F |style="text-align:center;"|39 |Niko Kapanen |USA Phoenix Coyotes |} ==Olympic record== MedalTop Olympic Games 1988 Calgary 1994 Lillehammer 1998 Nagano 2006 Torino MedalBottom *1952 -
