Frank Bello (born July 9, 1965) is the bass guitar player for the metal band Anthrax. He replaced Dan Lilker on the Spreading the Disease album. He was warmly received by the band's fans, who enjoyed his energetic stage presence and inventive bass style. He played fast, but with feeling that is generally lacking in heavy metal music. This can be attributed to his complex right-hand technique which allows him to play as fast as most metal bassists using picks, but with the tonality that comes from fingerstyle playing. However Bello uses a pick on occasions as exampled in Anthrax's cover of Joe Jackson's "Got The Time". He held the bottom up for the band along with Ian's massive crunch, but Anthrax often employed guitar squeals and their vocalist Joey Belladonna had a high-pitched singing style. After leaving Anthrax in early 2004 Frank joined forces with Helmet - another NYC-based band. Frank has since reunited with the "classic" Anthrax line-up, consisting of himself, Scott Ian (rhythm guitar), Joey Belladonna (vocals), Charlie Benante (drums--also Bello's uncle), and Dan Spitz (lead guitar). Bello also has a signature model Fender electric bass, combining an Fender Aerodyne body with a Precision Bass-width neck, Precision and Jazz pickups, and non-standard custom-chosen hardware. Pickups used on the bass are Seymour Duncan SPB-3 precision bass pickup in the neck position and a Samarium Cobalt Noiseless Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge position.
