'''Gazel''' is a form of Turkish music that has almost died out. While in other parts of the Central Asian world, gazel is synonymous with [[ghazal]], in Turkey it denotes an improvised form of solo singing<ref>{{cite book |title=World Music: The Rough Guide |last=Broughton |first=Simon |coauthors=Ellingham, Mark |year=1999 |publisher=Rough Guides |isbn=1858286352 |pages=p. 403 |url=http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=gyiTOcnb2yYC&pg=PA403&dq=Gazel+%2Bmusic&num=100&sig=VPSo8pMYwYNrXDW64PQldCdjcN4 }}</ref> that is sometimes accompanied by the ney, ud, or tanbur. It is the vocal equivalent to the Turkish [[taksim]], an improvised instrumental composition.
The form began to die out in the mid-20th century because of its associations with nightclubs,<ref>{{cite book |title=Rethinking Modernity and National Identity in Turkey |last=Bozdoğan |first=Sibel |coauthors=Kasaba, Reşat |year=1997 |publisher=University of Washington
