It is the former Mid-Med Bank (see below) and the second-oldest bank in Malta. HSBC's Malta headquarters are at 233 Republic Street, [[Valletta]]. It offers a comprehensive range of financial products and services via a network of around 60 branches and offices throughout [[Malta]] and [[Gozo]]. HSBC Bank Malta is part of the European region within the [[HSBC Group]] and therefore reports to [[HSBC Bank (Europe)|HSBC Bank plc]]. HSBC Malta has offices in [[Melbourne]] and [[Toronto]] to serve the very strong and influential Maltese communities in each country, along with an offshore banking operation in Malta itself. ==History== HSBC Malta dates back to the commencement of operations in Malta by the [[Anglo-Egyptian Bank]] (est. 1864), which merged with the [[National Bank of South Africa]] and [[The Colonial Bank]] (est. 1836) to become [[Barclays Bank Dominion Colonial Overseas]] in 1925 after Barclays acquired The Colonial Bank when it acquired the [[London Provincial and South Western Bank]] in 1918. In 1954 the bank shortened its name to [[Barclays Bank D.C.O.]] and in 1971 became [[Barclays Bank International]]. ===Nationalisation=== In 1975 the government of Malta nationalized Barclays Bank International's operations in Malta and renamed it Mid-Med Bank, exercising its option to purchase Barclays’ remaining shareholding in Mid-Med in 1979. In 1991 the Maltese government sold 33% of Mid-Med Bank to the public and in 1993 Mid-Med listed on Malta’s stock exchange. Mid-Med acquired 25% of [[Lohombus Bank]], which specializes in housing finance, in 1995 along with the [[Investment Finance Bank]] in Malta. Mid-Med gained a majority of Lohombus Bank in Malta when it acquired another 35% of the firm in 1996, the same year it established a representative office in London. ===Mid-Med joins the HSBC Group=== [[Image:HSBClogoonbuilding.jpg|thumb|HSBC logo]] In 1999 [[Midland Bank]] (a subsidiary of [[HSBC]]) Tony Mahoney acquired the government of Malta’s 67.1% direct holding in Mid-Med, as well its 2.7% indirect holdings. (Midland had entered Malta with a branch in 1996). When HSBC brought all its operations under a common name, Mid-Med became HSBC Malta Bank plc. HSBC absorbed Mid-Med’s representative offices in [[Dubai]], [[Milan]], and [[Luxembourg]] into the HSBC offices in their respective countries but established a "Malta Desk" in several of these countries. Lohombus Bank became HSBC Malta (Home Loans) Ltd. ===Malta Call Centre=== In April 2006 HSBC announced that it would be opening a new call centre in Malta, with an investment of €7 million and the creation of 350 jobs. The centre will deal with calls from [[HSBC Bank (Europe)|HSBC Bank plc's]] customers in the [[United Kingdom]], and operate as a branch of that company, under the oversight of HSBC Malta management [http://www.timesofmalta.com/core/article.php?id=222258]. ==HSBC Bank's Branches in Malta and Gozo== *HSBC Attard Branch: Triq il-Mosta, [[Attard]] *HSBC Balzan Branch: Pjazza Bertu Fenech, [[Balzan]] *HSBC Birkirkara Agency: Triq is-Santwarju, [[Birkirkara]] *HSBC Birkirkara Branch: Triq in-Naxxar, Birkirkara *HSBC Birzebbugia Branch: Triq Birżebbuġa, [[Birżebbuġa]] *HSBC Bugibba Branch: Misraħ il-Bajja, [[Buġibba]], [[San Pawl il-Baħar]] *HSBC Cospicua Branch: Triq il-Pelegrinaġġ, [[Bormla]] *HSBC Fgura Branch: Wesgħat il-Kunsill ta' l-Ewropa, [[Fgura]] *HSBC Floriana Branch: Development House, [[Floriana]] *HSBC Gudja Agency: Triq il-Kbira, [[Gudja]] *HSBC Gzira Branch: The Strand, [[Gżira]] *HSBC Hamrun Branch: Triq il-Kbira San Ġużepp, [[Ħamrun]] *HSBC Luqa Branch: Triq il-Karmnu, [[Luqa]] *HSBC Marsascala Branch: Triq Sant' Antnin, [[Marsaskala]] *HSBC Mellieha Branch: Triq Ġorġ Borg Olivier, [[Mellieħa]] *HSBC Mosta Branch: Triq il-Kostituzzjoni, [[Mosta]] *HSBC Msida Branch: Xatt ta' l-Imsida, [[Msida]] *HSBC Nadur Agency: Pjazza San Pietru u San Pawl, [[Nadur]] *HSBC Naxxar Branch: Misraħ il-Vitorja, [[Naxxar]] *HSBC Paola Branch: Pjazza Antoine De Paule, [[Paola, Malta|Paola]] *HSBC Qormi Branch: Triq San Sebastjan, [[Qormi]] *HSBC Rabat Branch: Pjazza Saqqajja, [[Rabat, Malta|Rabat]] *HSBC San Gwann Branch: Triq in-Naxxar, [[San Ġwann]] *HSBC Sliema High Street Branch: Triq il-Kbira, [[Sliema]] *HSBC Sliema Manuel Dimech Street Branch: Triq Manwel Dimech, [[Sliema]] *HSBC St. Andrews Branch: Triq Sant' Andrija, [[Swieqi]] *HSBC St. Julians Branch: Triq San Ġorġ, [[San Ġiljan]] *HSBC St. Paul's Bay Branch: Triq San Pawl, [[San Pawl il-Baħar]] *HSBC St. Venera Branch: Trejqet Fleur-de-Lys, [[Santa Venera]] *HSBC Tarxien Branch: Triq il-Kbira, [[Tarxien]] *HSBC University on Campus Agency: Humanities Building, [[University of Malta]], [[Msida]] *HSBC Valletta Customs Branch: Xatt Lascaris, [[Valletta]] *HSBC Valletta International Premier Centre: Triq ir-Repubblika, [[Valletta]] *HSBC Valletta Merchants Street Branch: Triq il-Merkanti, [[Valletta]] *HSBC Victoria Gozo Branch: Triq ir-Repubblika, [[Victoria, Malta|Victoria (It-Tokk)]] *HSBC Xaghra Agency: Vjal it-8 ta' Settembru, [[Xagħra]] *HSBC Zabbar Branch: Triq is-Santwarju, [[Żabbar]] *HSBC Zebbug Malta Branch: Triq il-Kbira, [[Żebbuġ, Malta]] *HSBC Zejtun Branch: Vjal il-25 ta' Novembru, [[Żejtun]] *HSBC Zurrieq Branch: Triq il-Kbira, [[Żurrieq]] ==HSBC Bank's Automated Offices in Malta and Gozo== *HSBC Marsaxlokk Automated Office: Xatt is-Sajjieda, [[Marsaxlokk]] *HSBC Sliema Plaza Automated Office: Triq Bisazza, [[Sliema]] *HSBC Valletta Automated Office: Triq ir-Repubblika, [[Valletta]] *HSBC Xlendi Automated Office: Triq ir-Rabat, [[Xlendi]], [[Munxar]] ==HSBC Bank's Offsite ATMs== *HSBC Blata l-Bajda Hexagon House ATM: Spencer Gardens, [[Marsa]] *HSBC Buġibba Oracle Casino ATM: Dawret il-Gżejjer, [[Qawra]], [[San Pawl il-Baħar]] *HSBC Cirkewwa ATM: Ċirkewwa Ferry, [[Ċirkewwa]], [[Mellieħa]] *HSBC Floriana MCP Car Park ATM: Triq ir-Re Dwardu VII, [[Floriana]] *HSBC Gwardamangia St. Luke's Hospital ATM: Misraħ San Luqa, [[Pietà, Malta|Pietà]] *HSBC Kirkop ST Microelectronics ATM: [[ST Microelectronics]], [[Kirkop]] *HSBC Mdina ATM: Pjazza tas-Sur, [[Mdina]] *HSBC Mgarr ATM: Triq Fisher, [[Mġarr]] *HSBC Msida Junior College: Misraħ G.
