Hand County was named for George H. Hand originally from [[Akron, Ohio]]. It was created in [[1873]] by the [[Dakota Territory|Dakota territorial]] [[legislature]]. The boundaries were finalized in [[1882]], the year it was organized.

There were 1,840 housing units at an average density of 1 per square mile (0/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 99.30% [[Race (United States Census)|White]], 0.03% [[Race (United States Census)|Black]] or [[Race (United States Census)|African American]], 0.13% [[Race (United States Census)|Native American]], 0.08% [[Race (United States Census)|Asian]], 0.13% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.32% from two or more races. 0.29% of the population were [[Race (United States Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Race (United States Census)|Latino]] of any race.
There were 1,543 households out of which 28.10% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.90% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 4.40% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.90% were non-families. 30.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
