Initially conceived by former Pet Shop Boys manager Tom Watkins as a tougher version of Take That, East 17 decided that their first single - like Take That's debut - should be an upbeat dance number that would sell to both teenagers and to clubs. Inspired by current dance groups like the The KLF and Snap!, Tony Mortimer wrote "House of Love" as a mock 'rave' anthem, complete with a 'harmony' rap performed by Brian Harvey. Mortimer sung the main verses with the entire band singing the chorus. The Pedigree mix of the song, complete with a dog barking at the beginning and the end, was released as the single, complete with a low-budget video. "House of Love" shot to #10 on the chart, establishing East 17 as a premier pop act. It was included on their first album, Walthamstow, and their 1997 'Greatest Hits' compilation. ==Formats and track listings== {|width=85% style="font-size:90%;" |valign="top"| ; 7"-Single # "House of Love" (Pedigree Mix) (4:37) # "House of Love" (The Expedient Demo) (7:43) ; 12"-Maxi - US # "House of Love" (Son of a Bitch Mix) (9:02) # "House of Love" (Wet Nose Mix) (6:04) # "House of Love" (Murk's Main Mix) (6:41) # "House of Love" (Oscar G's Dope Dub) (6:45) ; 12"-Maxi - UK # "House of Love" (Son of a Bitch Mix) # "House of Love" (Glossy Coat Mix) # "House of Love" (Wet Nose Mix) |valign="top"| ; CD-Maxi # "House of Love" (Pedigree Mix) (4:41) # "House of Love" (Son Of A Bitch Mix) (9:05) # "House of Love" (Glossy Coat Mix) (8:08) # "House of Love" (Wet Nose Mix) (6:10) ; CD-Single UK: # "House of Love" (Pedigree Mix) (4:37) # "House of Love" (The Expedient Demo) (7:43) AU: # "House of Love" (Pedigree Mix) (4:41) # "House of Love" (Wet Nose Mix) (6:11) ; Cassette # "House of Love" (Pedigree Mix) (4:37) # "House of Love" (The Expedient Demo) (7:43) |} ==Charts== {| width="100%" |- valign="top" | width="50%" | {| class="wikitable" !align="left"|Chart (1992-1993) !align="center"|Peak<br>position |- |align="left"|Australian Singles Chart |align="center"|5 |- |align="left"|Austrian Singles Chart |align="center"|7 |- |align="left"|Dutch Singles Chart |align="center"|21 |- |align="left"|French Singles Chart |align="center"|8 |- |align="left"|Irish Singles Chart |align="center"|16 |- |align="left"|Norwegian Singles Chart |align="center"|8 |- |align="left"|Swedish Singles Chart |align="center"|1 <small>(6)</small> |- |align="left"|Swiss Singles Chart |align="center"|15 |- |align="left"|UK Singles Chart |align="center"|10 |- |align="left"|US Hot Dance Club Play |align="center"|8 |- |} start box end box ==External link== * House of Love music video on Youtube ==References== 2 East 17
