It operated the plant until 1987 when it transferred to Borden Chemicals and Plastics Operating Limited Partnership. Following that company's bankruptcy, the facility was purchased by Formosa Plastics Corporation in 2002.[http://www.csb.gov/completed_investigations/docs/FormosaPlasticsIlliopolisReport.pdf] On [[April 23]], [[2004]], the [[Formosa Plastics]] plant (formerly Borden) in Illiopolis exploded, killing five people, injuring others and causing a portion of the town to be evacuated.[http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/world/archives/2004/04/26/2003138165] [http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/93/HR/09300HR0967.htm] [http://www.epa.state.il.us/community-relations/fact-sheets/formosa-plastics/index.html] The fire burned for several days and the plant had not reopened as of 2007. On [[March 6]], [[2007]] the [[United States Chemical Safety Board]] (CSB) released its final report on the incident indicating that an operator bypassed a safety interlock and drained a pressurized reactor instead of an empty one they were in the process of cleaning. The report listed as root causes, that Formosa-IL and Borden Chemical "did not adequately address the potential for human error."[http://www.chemsafety.gov/index.cfm?folder=news_releases&page=news&NEWS_ID=346#] ==See also== *[[Sangamon Ordnance Plant]] ==References== <references /> ==External links== {{Mapit-US-cityscale|39.851351|-89.247131}} {{Sangamon County, Illinois}} [[Category:Sangamon County, Illinois]] [[Category:Villages in Illinois]] [[Category:Springfield, Illinois metropolitan area]] [[nl:Illiopolis]] [[pt:‎Illiopolis]] [[vo:Illiopolis]]
