Founded in 1905, Loma Linda University (LLU) is a private, Christian, coeducational, health sciences university located in Southern California 60 miles east of Los Angeles close to San Bernardino. LLU is part of the Seventh-day Adventist Church's system of higher education. As such it provides an environment for learning that emphasizes individual commitment to Christ, personal integrity, intellectual development, and community service. Eight schools and the Faculty of Graduate Studies comprise the University organization. More than 100 certificate and degree programs are offered by the schools of Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, Religion, and Science and Technology. Curricula offered range from certificates of completion and associate in science degrees to doctor of philosophy and professional doctoral degrees. Students from more than 80 countries around the world and virtually every state in the nation are represented in Loma Linda University's student body. LLU also offers distance education. The University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Loma Linda Academy, a Seventh-day Adventist K-12 school, is located nearby.
The university also hosts a branch office of the Ellen G. White Estate.

History
Loma Linda University was founded in 1905 as a sanitarium, called the College of Medical Evangelists, by John Burden and Ellen G. White.
From 1913 to 1962, the university taught basic sciences in Loma Linda, but sent its students to Los Angeles for clinical experience. In 1961 the college was upgraded to university status and renamed after the city. All its science and clinical faculty were consolidated within the city by 1962. On July 9, 1967, the university opened the Loma Linda University Medical Center with more than 125 patients from the old community hospital. The university also operated the Seventh-day Adventist liberal arts college in Riverside from 1967 to 1990, which is now known as La Sierra University.
In 1980, the state designated LLU the only Level I trauma center in San Bernardino, Riverside, Inyo and Mono counties, which comprise more than a fourth of the state's land mass. About 1,600 emergency helicopters land there each year. In 1991, B. Lyn Behrens became the first female president of LLU. Serving until March 2008, she was succeeded by Richard Hart, who had previously served as LLU's chancellor.
Loma Linda University expects the completion of its new 150,000-square-foot Centennial complex in spring 2009. The complex will include new classrooms, two 100-seat amphitheaters and more than 100 workstations with labs for dental, medical, physical therapy and graduate students. Highly advanced technology will allow the university to link to several areas around the globe along with new simulation labs where students can practice their medical skills on live actors and mannequins. The complex is expected to bump up the university's growth by 25 percent from its current enrollment of 4,000 students to 5,000 students by 2010.
Controversies
Religious Discrimination
As a wholly owned subsidiary of the Seventh-day Adventist church and status as a non-profit religious organization, Loma Linda University practices religious discrimination in student selection, employee selection, and employee termination.
*Loma Linda University has fired employees for becoming pregnant without being married. In 1992 a non-Adventist employee sued Loma Linda University for discrimination based on gender, marital status, and pregnancy, which led to her being fired, stating that this violated the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) section 12900. Arriaga, who at the time was unmarried, became pregnant. The University terminated Arriaga's employment because of her engagement in extramarital sex. The court ruled that Loma Linda University is excluded under FEHA because it is a nonprofit religious corporation<ref>

Medicare Fraud
Loma Linda University has been involved in several federal Medicare fraud lawsuits.
*Loma Linda Behavioral Medicine Center, part of LLUHSC, paid $2.1 million dollars to settle a federal lawsuit that the organization had fraudulently over billed federal health insurance programs. The lawsuit alleged that the center had worked with its billing service to prepare two different cost reports, one for internal use and an inflated one to bill Medicare.<ref>

*The Loma Linda Pathology Group, part of the university's residency program, paid $2.2 million dollars to settle a federal lawsuit over fraudulent Medicare billings. The lawsuit alleged that the hospital had been billing Medicare for procedures done by residents and interns as if they had been done by the attending physicians.

Relationship with Representative Jerry Lewis
Loma Linda University has accepted large amounts of monies considered congressional pork by government watchdogs, most of which has been facilitated by its close relationship with representative Jerry Lewis, R-San Bernardino, who is listed as one of the 22 most corrupt members of congress by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW). From 1998-2003 Loma Linda has received $167.2 million in congressional earmarks, the number one academic recipient in the country getting nearly $60 million more than the runner up, the University of South Florida.<ref>

Several grants were from the department of defense including $5,000,000 from NASA for space radiation research. Critic's also point out that Mr. Lewis's brother is employed by Loma Linda University.<ref>

Anti Competitive
Following a long public relations campaign, which included television/newspaper adds, petitions, and employee rallies, Loma Linda University squelched a proposed private surgical center from opening nearby. This was accomplished by purchasing it at a $27.5 million premium with an unsolicited bid of $80 million. The university feared that this center would compete with them for the best candidates for surgery. This purchase resulted in a large loss of revenue for the city of Loma Linda, since the center would have paid taxes, but Loma Linda University does not have to since it is a non-profit organization.<ref>
