MSU Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics (CMC) (Факультет вычислительной математики и кибернетики (ВМиК) МГУ) is a part of Moscow State University, founded in 1970 by Andrey N. Tikhonov.
Education
CMC is the leading Russian research and training center in the fields of applied mathematics, computing and software development. Education at CMC combines in-depth theoretical studies, extensive practical exercises, and research.
Main 12 Master's programs:
* Mathematical physics
* Mathematical modeling
* Computational diagnostics
* Numerical methods
* Theory of probability and mathematical statistics
* Operations research and systems analysis
* Optimization and optimal control
* Mathematical cybernetics
* Software for computers and computer systems
* Networks software
* System programming
* Decision making in Economics and Finance
History
A group of professors and scholars from Department of Physics and Department of Mechanics and Mathematics formed CMC in 1970. The three departments are still closely connected.
Perhaps, Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science would be a more precise name for this one. The word cybernetics historically refers to what Norbert Wiener introduced in his book Cybernetics, or Control and Communication in the Animal and Machine (1948). In the Soviet Union cybernetics was initially considered antiscientific, and was prohibited. However, in 1960s more liberal scientific views were adopted, triggering a remarkable boom in research and education. That was later reflected in the name of this department founded in 1970. Since that time the CMC name became a well-recognized brand and is unlikely to change.
The deans of the faculty:
* A. N. Tikhonov (1970-1990)
* D. P. Kostomarov (1991-1999)
* E. I. Moiseev (1999-now)
Staff
Faculty staff consists of more than 550 professors and research scientists. There are about 2200 students and 200 post-graduate students. Each year more than 500 students are accepted. As most departments of the MSU are, CMC is quite prestigious, number of applications can reach up to ten per place.
