The competition has been held in [[Raleigh, North Carolina|Raleigh]] every year since 1978. Prior to that, it was held in various locales including [[Charlotte]], [[Greensboro, North Carolina|Greensboro]], [[Burlington, North Carolina|Burlington]], [[Wilmington, North Carolina|Wilmington]], and [[Morehead City, North Carolina|Morehead City]]. North Carolina has once ([[1961]]) won the Miss America crown.
