Patel was born in [[Tanzania]] in [[1938]] and educated in Tanzania, [[India]] and [[London]]. He studied at what was then Queens college, [[University of St Andrews]] (now the [[University of Dundee]]) graduating in 1964. He then proceeded to work for more than 30 years at Dundee's [[Ninewells Hospital|Ninewells hospital and medical school]].
Patel's clinical and academic interests include high risk [[obstetrics]], premature labour, foetal growth retardation, obstetric epidemiology and quality of the standards of health and clinical provision.
