It was built in [[1983]] and holds 12,000 people. The ice hockey games and the [[speed skating]] events from the [[1984 Winter Olympics]] were held at this arena. Until 1991, it had been the venue for several international speed skating events and several speed skating world records were broken here. In 1992, shortly after the beginning of the [[Bosnian War]], it was destroyed by the Serb forces surrounding Sarajevo. After the war it was discovered that the foundations of the badly damaged building were secure, so it was rebuilt from 1997 to 1999 with the help of SFOR. It is now in service for several events. It lies 564 meters (1,850 feet) above sea level. Before the war the roof was mostly made of copper, this removed in the war to make ammunition material and replaced with tar paper (the reason for its quick incineration). Today its roof is made from plastic designed to look like the original copper-style.
