Bateson's grandfather's cousin was the [[genetics|geneticist]] [[William Bateson]]. Patrick Bateson received his [[Bachelor's degree|BA]] in [[zoology]] and [[Doctor of Philosophy|Ph.D]] in [[ethology|animal behaviour]] from [[University of Cambridge|Cambridge University]]. Previous academic positions include a [[Harkness Fellowship]] at [[Stanford University]] and ten years as head of the Cambridge sub-department of Animal Behaviour.
