He was born [[15 March]] [[1924]] and educated at Valentine's School, [[Ilford]], [[Ilford County High School]] and Clark's College, [[Bromley]].

Joining the Royal Navy in [[1942]] as a naval airman, he became commanding Officer of [[HMS Ark Royal (R09)|HMS Ark Royal]], [[1969]]-[[1971|71]], Vice Chief of Naval Staff, [[1975]]-[[1978|78]] and Chief of Naval Staff, 1978. He was awarded the [[Order of the Bath|KCB]] in 1977.
Following his retirement, he joined [[British Aerospace]]. He held several senior posts, including Group Deputy Chairman, [[1980]], board member, 1980-[[1989|89]] and member of the Supervisory Board of [[Airbus Industrie]], [[1987]]-89. He was also Chairman of [[Royal Ordnance]], 1987-[[1988|88]]. Subsequently, he was director of several other companies.

Sir Raymond is President of the HMS St. Vincent Association. He joined the training establishment in Gosport, Hampshire as a Naval Airman in 1942.
Sir Raymond is Patron of the [[Fleet Air Arm Association]].
