The Royal High School is a private girls' school in the city of Bath, catering for approximately 1000 pupils in total. It is one of the 29 members of the GDST whose schools are renowned for providing a good all round with a commitment to high academic standards.
Academics
It regularly comes near the top of league tables for Bath schools for GCSE and A-Level results. In particular the school is noted for its Modern Languages department which frequently produces several of the top five performing candidates at GCSE for French, German, Spanish and Italian.
The school is located on Lansdown Hill just outside Bath city centre. It has boarding facilities catering for about 100 girls.
The Royal High School is part of the Girls' Day School Trust network. It is the only member of the GDST to provide boarding accommodation - this is as a result of the merger that created the Royal High in 1998, when Bath High School (day) and the Royal School (day and boarding) joined together. Now, the Junior School has Hope House as its main building, whereas the Senior School has the main school building and the Winfield centre for sixth form students.
For the beginning of the academic year 2008, the school is going to implement the International Baccalaureate Diploma as an alternative to A-levels for sixth-form students, and to introduce a co-educational sixth form.
The Arts
The school's music department has several choirs, an orchestra, a wind band, a swing band and a ceilidh band which often take part in regional competitions. The choirs have recently been on tour to Paris, Rome, Kraków, and Prague.
Sports
The school has a thriving sports department. Once a year, in February there is a sports tour to Barbados. There are excellent sports facilities on the Lansdown site and at the nearby Churchill fields on Lansdown. (These fields are often just called 'Chill' due to their exposed location.)
Notable alumnae
