It includes at least 376 species. Many authorities include the [[Neotominae]] and [[Tylomyinae]] as part of a larger definition of Sigmodontinae. When those genera are included, the species count numbers at least 508. They are distributed throughout the [[New World]], but are predominantly [[South America]]n. The sigmodontines inhabit many of the same [[ecological niche]]s that the [[Murinae]] inhabit in the [[Old World]]. The "[[Thomasomyini]]" from the Atlantic Forest of [[Brazil]] are generally thought to be not especially related to the "real" [[Thomasomyini]] from the northern [[Andes]] and [[Amazonia]]. The genera ''[[Wiedomys]]'' and ''[[Sigmodon]]'' are generally placed in their own tribe, and the "phyllotines" ''[[Irenomys]]'', ''[[Punomys]]'', ''[[Euneomys]]'', and ''[[Reithrodon]]'' are considered ''incertae sedis''. The Sigmodontinae are divided into a number of tribes and genera: *Subfamily Sigmodontinae **Tribe [[Sigmodontini]] ***''[[Sigmodon]]'' - Cotton Rats **Tribe [[Ichthyomyini]] ***''[[Anotomys]]'' - Ecuadorian Fish-eating Rat ***''[[Chibchanomys]]'' - Chibchan Water Mouse ***''[[Ichthyomys]]'' - Crab-eating Rats ***''[[Neusticomys]]'' - Fish-eating Rats ***''[[Rheomys]]'' - Water Mice **[[Oryzomyalia]] ***Tribe [[Oryzomyini]] ****''[[Holochilus]]'' - Marsh Rats ****''[[Megalomys]]'' † - Giant Rice Rats ****''[[Melanomys]]'' - Dark Rice Rats ****''[[Microryzomys]]'' - Small Rice Rats ****''[[Nectomys]]'' - Water Rats ****''[[Nesoryzomys]]'' - Galapagos Mice ****''[[Oecomys]]'' - Arboreal Rice Rats ****''[[Oligoryzomys]]'' - Pygmy Rice Rats ****''[[Oryzomys]]'' - Rice Rats ****''[[Pseudoryzomys]]'' - False Rice Rats ****''[[Scolomys]]''- New World Spiny Mice ****''[[Sigmodontomys]]'' - Rice Water Rats ****''[[Zygodontomys]]'' - Cane Mice ****''[[Amphinectomys]]'' - Ucayali Water Rat ****''[[Neacomys]]'' - Bristly Mice ****''[[Lundomys]]'' - Lund's Amphibious Rat ****''[[Microakodontomys]]'' - Brasilia's Mouse ****''[[Handleyomys]]'' ****''[[Noronhomys]]''† - Vespucci's Rodent ***Tribe [[Thomasomyini]] ****''[[Aepeomys]]'' - Montane Mice ****''[[Chilomys]]'' - Columbian Forest Mouse ****''[[Delomys]]'' - Atlantic Forest Rats ****''[[Phaenomys]]'' - Rio de Janeiro Arboreal Rat ****''[[Rhagomys]]'' - Brazilian Arboreal Mouse ****''[[Rhipidomys]]'' - Climbing Mice ****''[[Thomasomys]]'' - Olfield Mice ****''[[Wilfredomys]]'' - Wilfred's Mice ****''[[Abrawayaomys]]'' - Ruschi's Rat ***Tribe [[Wiedomyini]] ****''[[Wiedomys]]'' - Red-nosed Mouse ****''[[Cholomys]]''† ***Tribe [[Akodontini]] ****''[[Akodon]]'' - South American Grass Mice ****''[[Bibimys]]'' - Crimson-nosed Rats ****''[[Blarinomys]]'' - Brazilian Shrew-Mouse ****''[[Chelemys]]'' - Long-clawed Mice ****''[[Geoxus]]'' - Long-clawed Mole Mouse ****''[[Juscelinomys]]'' - Burrowing Mice ****''[[Kunsia]]'' - Giant Rats ****''[[Lenoxus]]'' - Andean Rat ****''[[Notiomys]]'' - Edward's Long-clawed Mouse ****''[[Oxymycterus]]'' - Hocicudos ****''[[Podoxymys]]'' - Roraima Mouse ****''[[Scapteromys]]'' - Swamp Rat ****''[[Thalpomys]]'' - Carrado Mice ****''[[Necromys]]'' - Bolo Mice ****''[[Thaptomys]]'' - Ebony Akodont ****''[[Deltamys]]'' - Kemp's Grass Mouse ****''[[Abrothrix]]'' - ****''[[Pearsonomys]]'' - Pearson's Long-clawed Akodont ****''[[Brucepattersonius]]'' ***Tribe [[Phyllotini]] ****''[[Andalgalomys]]'' - Chaco Mice ****''[[Andinomys]]'' - Andean Mouse ****''[[Auliscomys]]'' - Big-Eared Mice ****''[[Calomys]]'' - Vesper Mice ****''[[Chinchillula]]'' - Altiplano Chinchilla Mouse ****''[[Eligmodontia]]'' - Silky Desert Mice ****''[[Galenomys]]'' - Garlepp's Mouse ****''[[Graomys]]'' - Leaf-eared Mice ****''[[Irenomys]]'' - Chilean Climbing Mouse ****''[[Phyllotis]]'' - Leaf-Eared Mice ****''[[Euneomys]]'' - Chinchilla Mice ****''[[Neotomys]]'' - Andean Swamp Rat ****''[[Punomys]]'' - Puna Mouse ****''[[Reithrodon]]'' - Bunny Rat ****''[[Salinomys]]'' ****''[[Loxodontomys]]'' ****''[[Tapecomys]]'' - Primordial Tapecua ****''[[Ichthyurodon]]''† ****''[[Olympicomys]]''† ****''[[Tafimys]]''† **''Incertae sedis'' ***''[[Juliomys]]'' ==References== *D'Elía, G., L.
