'''Sodium orthovanadate''' is the chemical compound Na<sub>3</sub>VO<sub>4</sub> and contains the tetrahedral VO<sub>4</sub><sup>3−</sup>.<ref>{{Greenwood&Earnshaw}}</ref> It is an [[Enzyme inhibitor|inhibitor]] of [[protein tyrosine phosphatase]]s, [[alkaline phosphatase]]s and a number of [[ATPase]]s, most likely acting as a [[phosphate]] analogue. The VO<sub>4</sub><sup>3-</sup> [[ion]] binds irreversibly to the active sites of most [[protein tyrosine phosphatase]]s.
It is often added to [[buffer solution]]s that are used in [[protein analysis]] in [[molecular biology]]. The aim is to preserve the [[phosphorylation]] of proteins of interest by inhibiting endogenous phosphatases present in [[cell lysate]] mixture.<!-- and to prevent the degradation of [[protein]]s of interest by endogenous proteases present in [[cell lysate]] mixture.
