Souls Rest are a live hip hop band based in Liverpool, England. Their influences range from underground UK hip hop to jazz and funk. In contrast to more mainstream hip-hop, all the band members play real instruments. In their three years together, they have gained significant credibility and popularity around various venues in Liverpool and the North West of England, even gaining a following of fans from as far away as Canada. As a result of their unexpected popularity, the band went full-time in September 2005 and now play a variety of gigs around the North West of England, including a bi-monthly clubnight at Liverpool's Zanzibar nightclub, as well as various urban music workshops for young people.
History
Souls Rest formed in January 2003, releasing their first 11-track album in November that year. 2004 was a busy year for the band, performing a nationwide tour with 29th Chapter, playing at music festivals such as Greenbelt in Cheltenham and London's Soul in the City, plus beginning to break into the Liverpool club scene performing live with such acts as A-Skillz. They completed their second CD, Extended wordPlay, in February 2004 and a third, self-titled CD, in 2006.
2006 has seen new developments in the world of Souls Rest. Now down to a 3-piece consisting of emcee, DJ/producer and live drummer, a new sound has emerged with the release of their third studio album. This recording contains much more focus on the emceeing, decks and beats, creating some "mad rhythms, huge basslines, sweet melodies and an even better live show".

Tracks 5 & 6 of their EP - Extended wordPlay - were released for free after the CD's initial release from their web site to members of the band's mailing list. It is notable for its original packaging, with a 3D textured case and black vinyl-style CD.
The band's third album, self titled Souls Rest, is the band's first release as a three-piece, described in their newsletter to fans as having a "distinct change in sound as [they] move to a more loop-driven style of classic hip hop music".
