It is composed of multiple sets of suburban neighborhoods and a commercial center, which is in the process of being converted to a downtown <ref>[http://www.south-burlington.com/Planning/index-cc.htm City of South Burlington, Vermont Planning & Zoning]</ref>. The area of South Burlington was first granted by [[New Hampshire]] as part of Burlington township on June 7, 1763. The town of Burlington was organized around 1785. In 1865, the unincorporated village of [[Burlington, Vermont|Burlington]] was chartered as a city. The remaining area of the town was then organized as a separate town with the name South Burlington. The town of South Burlington was later also incorporated as a city in 1971.

According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the city has a total area of 29.6 [[square mile]]s (76.7 [[km²]]), of which, 16.6 square miles (43.1 km²) of it is land and 13.0 square miles (33.6 km²) of it (43.82%) is water.
==Demographics==
As of the [[census]]{{GR|2}} of 2000, there were 15,814 people, 6,332 households, and 3,786 families residing in the city. The [[population density]] was 950.2 people per square mile (366.9/km²). There were 6,501 housing units at an average density of 390.6/sq mi (150.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.78% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.83% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.18% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 3.35% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.01% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.41% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.42% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.21% of the population.
There were 6,332 households out of which 29.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.7% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% were non-families. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city the population was spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 12.5% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $51,566, and the median income for a family was $67,241. Males had a median income of $42,076 versus $29,883 for females. About 2.3% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 1.6% of those under age 18 and 7.2% of those age 65 or over.
