This season featured eleven teams of two with a pre-existing relationship in a race around the world to win one million dollars. Filming ran from November 7, 2005 to December 3, 2005. The show premiered on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 and concluded on May 17, 2006. On August 27, 2006, Season 9 won a Primetime Emmy Award for "Outstanding Reality-Competition Program", the fourth consecutive award for the television series. Producers nominated this season instead of the critically lambasted Family Edition, which was also eligible for the award. __TOC__ ==Results== The following teams participated in the Race, with their relationships at the time of filming. Other races have started and ended in the same city (Season 1 in New York City and Season 6 in Chicago), but the location of the start and stop lines have been in different parts of the city. *This is the 2nd race (aside from the previous family edition) in which on every leg; at least once the teams had to drive themselves somewhere. ===Pre-Race=== *The Amazing Race isn't Tyler's only traveling claim to fame. In 2004, he walked the whole length of Japan to impress his Japanese girlfriend as well as made a documentary about the experience called Kintaro Walks Japan. By the end of the trip, he was often running into many locals who already knew him as "Kintaro" from the TV news. *BJ appeared on a campus TV program called "The BJ Show" in honor of himself and co-host BJ Novak. Novak is now a writer/producer/actor on NBC's hit comedy show "The Office". *B.J. Averell is also the best friend of Harvard graduate, former band member of North & South, and Top 40 contestant of American Idol (season 6), Tom Lowe ===In-Race=== *When BJ and Tyler offered Phil one dollar they received at leg midpoint of Leg 3 that they didn't need, at the mat in Moscow, they told him "don't waste that opportunity." This was likely a reference to Phil's Discovery Channel show and book, No Opportunity Wasted. *On Leg 4, BJ and Tyler wore "Bowling Mom" t-shirts, in homage to Linda and Karen in Season 5. *In Leg 8, Eric and Jeremy questioned the intelligence of BJ & Tyler's choice of Detours by saying that they thought "they were supposed to be smart; didn't they go to Harvard and Stanford?" BJ did graduate from Harvard, but Tyler went to the University of California at Santa Cruz. Eric and Jeremy's comment is quite revealing though, since Tyler achieved some media attention in 1999 for his failed political-style "campaign" to be admitted to Stanford They'll Try Anything - Stanford Alumni Magazine. *Although it seemed BJ & Tyler and Joseph & Monica were in a race for who would get to use the Yield in Leg 9, BJ & Tyler revealed on RFF Reality TV Podcast that Joseph & Monica had earlier lost their Yield envelope containing their 'courtesy of' sticker, and thus lost their power to use any future Yields. *In the Roadblock of Leg 9, one camera was dropped off the plane with each racer and another was tied to the parachute. *One of the locations that BJ & Tyler delivered to in the Detour for Leg 11 was the offices of GONZO, an anime studio. *Leg 11 was a 36 hour Pit Stop. During their time at the Pit Stop, teams were able to go on rides at the amusement park they had just visited. *Racers may have been given hints to the final Roadblock (involving placing flags of countries visited in sequential order) throughout the race. Footage from Leg 5 shows a clue with the Italian flag printed above the clue information. This and other flag hints may have appeared on other clues. ===Post-Race=== *Ray proposed to Yolanda on the CBS Early Show on the morning after the season finale. While it was a total shock to her, Yolanda enthusiastically accepted. *John Lowe has been painting his chicken paintings. He had his first show soon after the show aired which he sold all 27 paintings. He continues to show in Boston and in FL where Lisa Hinds(One of Frosties)has a gallery. He has a show scheduled at The Ashmont Grill, Dorchester, MA in late July 2008. *Due to scheduling conflicts with the season finale and the premiere of the film adaptation of The Da Vinci Code, Eric & Jeremy stated that they were unable to attend the premiere of the movie at the Cannes Film Festival, which was their prize for gaining first place on Leg 6. Eric & Jeremy later stated that CBS was going to give them a different prize to make up for it. *Joseph and Monica got married. *On The Finish Line, Eric announced that he was dating Danielle and had planned to move to New York to be closer to her. *Eric and Danielle were selected to race in The Amazing Race All-Stars, and are the only All-Star team that had not previously raced as a team. At the Leg 4 roadblock, they received a letter from Eric & Dani. According to Eric, Dave and Lori were also selected to participate, but were cut at the last minute. <!-- Do not add about their finish in All-Stars as to avoid future race spoilers - if someone wants All-Stars spoilers they can see the All-Stars page --> ** Following the All-Stars race, Eric & Danielle said in a post-race interview that they are no longer dating due to the fact they live too far apart, and are now just friends. *Tyler apparently planned a controversial walk across Iran with an Iranian-American friend of his to promote world peace, but that has not happened at the present time. *Lisa Hinds continues to run her art gallery, The House of Art in Destin FL. http://www.house-of-art.com/lisa.html *Joni Glaze and her husband were sent to California, due to work, and stayed for over a year. They are now back in Texas and living near Houston. She and Lisa are not in contact anymore. After trying to rekindle the relationship, she finally gave up. "I guess after 20 years of being apart, I should be used to it...I honestly believed her (Lisa) when she said she wanted to re-connect...I guess it was all for casting". Joni and her husband stay busy with running two companies and traveling. *At a convention for the show that took place after The Amazing Race 11, Scott said that he didn't speak to John anymore. Scott also said that they weren't really lifelong friends, rather that John was a longtime friend of Scott's sister and that's how they knew each other. ==Prizes== Individual prizes were awarded to the first team to complete a leg unless otherwise noted. * Leg 1 - $10,000 cash for each racer. * Leg 2 - All expense paid trip to Tahiti sponsored by Travelocity. * Leg 3 - All expense paid trip to Africa sponsored by Travelocity, for the first team to bring a Travelocity gnome (collected during the Roadblock in the second half of this leg) to the pit stop. By coincidence, Eric & Jeremy, who were the first to reach the pit stop, were also the first ones to bring the gnome to the pit stop, and thus won the prize. * Leg 4 - Digital imaging package from Duracell. * Leg 5 - Cruise for two to Mexico sponsored by Travelocity. * Leg 6 - Trip to The Da Vinci Code movie premiere in Hollywood, California (The prize was awarded to the first team to arrive at the Pit Stop bearing two parchments and demonstrating that, when combined, they revealed a picture of Leonardo Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man and a coded message; the first team to arrive at the Pit Stop did show the message and were awarded the prize). * Leg 7 - All expense paid trip to Rome, Italy sponsored by Travelocity. * Leg 8 - All expense paid trip to Hong Kong sponsored by Travelocity. *Leg 9 - Two one-year leases for Mercedes ML350s like the ones driven on the leg. *Leg 10 - Cruise around Sydney Harbour, a tour of the Hunter Valley wine district and the Great Barrier Reef; as well, a luxury hotel room for the time that they would normally be at the Pit Stop (The prize on this leg was awarded to the team that had a picture of a "golden gnome" in an envelope they received with the Roadblock and Fast Forward clues and were told not to open until they reached the Pit Stop. Ray and Yolanda had the golden gnome and won.) *Leg 11 - Two T-Mobile Sidekicks, each with three years of free service. *Leg 12 - $1,000,000 <!-- ==Trivia== ===General=== ===Pre-Race=== ===In-Race=== ===Post-Race=== --> ==Race summary== Style1 === Leg 1 (United States → Brazil)=== <!--Episode title, "Here We Go Baby, Off to Win A Million Bucks"--> * Morrison, Colorado, USA (Red Rocks Amphitheatre) (Starting Line) * Denver (Denver International Airport) to São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil (Guarulhos International Airport) * São Paulo (Hotel Unique) * São Paulo (Viaduto Santa Efigênia) Detour * São Paulo (Santa Cecilia-114A Rua Frederico Abranches) pt icon * São Paulo (Estádio Municipal Paulo Machado de Carvalho) Pit Stop The first Detour of the Race was Motor Head or Rotor Head. The Detour for this half of the leg, Scour or Scrub, had teams search for 10 clues among 1500 Russian nesting dolls, or thoroughly clean a Russian public trolley bus, respectively. The Roadblock from the second half of the leg required one racer to find a Travelocity gnome hidden under giant gnome hats and feet in a field for their next clue. The Detour for the second half of the leg, Break It or Slap It, required teams either to break "stunt bottles" over each others' heads in search of a message printed on the back of the label or learn and perform a local folk dance. Additional Task * At Kilometer 114, teams had to take a zipline from the top of the hill to the bottom. * At the Mercedes-Benz headquarters, teams chose a Mercedes-Benz vehicle and chose a driver for their thrilling ride on the test track. === Leg 4 (Germany → Italy)=== <!--Episode title, "Good Thinking, I Took That Human Anatomy Class in High School"--> * Munich (Munich International Airport) to Palermo, Sicily , Italy (Palermo International Airport) * Palermo (Teatro Massimo) * Castellammare del Golfo Detour * Segesta (Segesta Amphitheater) Yield Roadblock * Segesta (Ancient Temple) Pit Stop In the Detour for this leg, Foundry or Laundry, teams chose between carrying a 110 lb. iron-cast bell and delivering it to a church or searching through over 2400 articles of laundry for one of sixteen articles of clothing bearing a red and yellow tag. Altar It required teams to assemble a shrine, including gold leafing a small Buddha statue for the shrine. ===Leg 11 (Thailand → Japan)=== <!-- Episode title, "5 Continents...10 Countries...And More than 59 thousand Miles!"--> *Ayutthaya Province (Royal Elephant Kraal) * Bangkok (Don Mueang International Airport) to Tokyo, Japan (Narita International Airport) *Tokyo (Shibuya Scramble crossing) *Tokyo (Hachikō Statue) Detour *Tokyo (Capsule Land Hotel) *Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi Prefecture (Fujikyu Highland Amusement Park) Roadblock *Yamanakako (Lake Yamanaka) Pit Stop The Detour was Maiden or Messenger. In Maiden, teams had to transport a young Japanese woman in a traditional Japanese palanquin for 1/3 mile to a tea ceremony pavilion. In Messenger, each person had to construct a foldable bicycle, ride their bikes through the streets of Tokyo, and deliver packages to two separate office buildings. The Roadblock required one team member to ride on three extreme rides in the Fujikyu Highland Amusement Park in the following order: The Pizza, Dodonpa, and Fujiyama. While riding the rides, they had to look for a man holding a sign. Upon completion of their third ride, they had to tell the park manager what was written on the sign to receive their next clue. If they didn't see the sign they would have to go on all three rides again. Additional Tasks * At the Royal Elephant Kraal, teams received T-Mobile Sidekicks displaying their next clue from the elephants. * At the Shibuya Crossing, teams had to find a message on display that would lead them to their next clue ("Find Hachiko!"). * At Lake Yamanaka, teams had to take a swan boat and paddle out to the Pit Stop, the big swan. ===Leg 12 (Japan → United States)=== <!-- Episode title, "5 Continents...10 Countries...And More than 59 thousand Miles!"--> <!-- Unsourced image removed: --> * Tokyo (Narita International Airport) to Anchorage, Alaska, USA (Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport) *Anchorage (Mirror Lake) Detour *Anchorage (Kincaid Park) * Anchorage, Alaska (Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport) to Denver, Colorado (Denver International Airport) *Golden (Clear Creek History Park) *Denver (Red Rocks Park) Roadblock Pit Stop (Finish Line) In the Detour teams had to choose between Drill It and Deliver It. In Drill It, teams had to drill 10 holes in the ice, push an ice fishing shack to their holes and properly position the shack over at least two of the holes. In Deliver It, teams had to load a bush plane with medical supplies, fly with a pilot over 75 miles to deliver the supplies and fly back. Due to poor weather conditions, Deliver It was subject to an indefinite delay. All teams, by default, decided to Drill It. The Roadblock required one team member to retrieve a flag for each destination country they traveled to during the race, other than the United States, and place the flags in the order which they visited each country. The other team member was allowed to assist but not physically participate. Teams had a reference board with the flags of each destination country and three incorrect flags. After finishing the Roadblock, teams were allowed to run to the Finish Line. ==References== Reflist ==External links== *Official site *TARFlies times (Season 9) *The Early Show - 'Team Hippie' Takes 'Amazing Race 9' (with video interview) *RFF Reality TV Podcast Interview with the winners of TAR9, BJ & Tyler *Eric and Danielle - Amazing Race Wiki The Amazing Race zh:极速前进9
