It was released at the same time as a companion [[Extended play|EP]], ''[[The Spine Surfs Alone]]''. It was preceded by the ''[[Indestructible Object]]'' EP, which featured two tracks that appear on ''The Spine''. Some tracks were available pre-release on [[Dial-A-Song]].
