The Sword is a heavy metal band from Austin, Texas. The band was formed in 2003 in Austin, Texas by J.D. Cronise. Cronise, a guitarist and vocalist who had played with the Those Peabodys, searched out a number of musicians before finally assembling the band completely with rhythm guitarist Kyle Shutt, bassist Bryan Richie and drummer Trivett Wingo.
Album history
The Sword's Debut album appeared in 2006, after four years of writing by Cronise.
In support of their first album, they toured the United States extensively with the likes of …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Lacuna Coil and In Flames; Europe with Clutch and Nebula; and Japan with Lamb of God. They contributed the song "Under the Boughs" to the Invaders compilation also on Kemado Records. A cover of their song "Freya" from Age of Winters appears on Guitar Hero II. Freya also appears in the soundtrack of the racing game Burnout Dominator. Their lyrics often deal with Norse mythology, and several of their songs are inspired by the novels of George R.R. Martin. In 2007 a clip from the song "Iron Swan" was used in Episode 21 of Big Love on HBO. "Iron Swan" was also used on the soundtrack of the skateboarding video game, Tony Hawk's Project 8. Fit Bike Co. has used two of their songs in two bmx videos they have produced.
In November of 2007, they released a split 12" EP with Swedish doom metal band Witchcraft. The EP contains two songs by The Sword, the latter being a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song."
Their second full-length album, Gods of the Earth, was released on April 1, 2008. It was preceded on March 18, 2008 by a 10" for the song "Fire Lances of the Ancient Hyperzephyrians". The band has recorded a music video for the single, and will debut in April. They are touring this summer with Metallica in Europe.
