It was the ninth European Football Championship, which is held every four years and supported by UEFA. The final tournament took place between 10 June and 26 June 1992. Eight countries contested the final tournament. Seven countries had to qualify for the final stage as Sweden qualified automatically as hosts of the event. The USSR qualified for the finals shortly before the break-up of the country, and took part in the tournament under the banner of the CIS before the former Soviet republics formed their own national teams after the competition. The CIS team consisted of the following Soviet republics: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Moldova and Tajikistan. Five out of 15 ex-republics were not members of CIS, and therefore did not send their players: Azerbaijan, Estonia, Georgia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Originally, Yugoslavia qualified for the final stage, but due to the Yugoslav wars, the team was disqualified and their qualifying group's runner-up Denmark took part in the championship. They shocked the continent by defeating first the defending European champions Holland in the semi-finals, and then the reigning world champions Germany for the title. The official anthem of the tournament was More Than a Game performed by Towe Jaarnek and Peter Jöback. It was also the first major football competition in which the players had their names printed on their backs. ==Qualification== UEFA Euro 1992 qualifying The following teams participated in the final tournament: *CIS (replaced former URS) *DEN (replaced YUG who were forced to withdraw for political reasons) *ENG *FRA *GER (first appearance as reunited country) *NED (reigning champions) *SCO (first appearance) *SWE (hosts, first appearance) ==Venues== *Nya Ullevi, Göteborg – Capacity: 44,000 *Råsundastadion, Solna – Capacity: 40,000 *Malmö Stadion, Malmö – Capacity: 30,000 *Idrottsparken, Norrköping – Capacity: 23,000 ==Match officials== col-begin-small col-2 ;AUT Austria *Hubert Forstinger
;BEL Belgium *Guy Goethals
;CIS Commonwealth of Independent States *Alexey Spirin
;DEN Denmark *Peter Mikkelsen
;FRA France *Gérard Biguet
;GER Germany *Aron Schmidhuber
;HUN Hungary *Sándor Puhl col-2 ;ITA Italy *Tullio Lanese *Pierluigi Pairetto
;NED Netherlands *John Blankenstein
;POR Portugal * José Rosa dos Santos
;ESP Spain *Emilio Soriano Aladren
;SWE Sweden *Bo Karlsson
;SUI Switzerland *Bruno Galler *Kurt Röthlisberger col-end ==Squads== :For a list of all participating squads see 1992 UEFA European Football Championship squads ==Results== ===Group stage=== All times local (CEST/UTC+2) ====Group A==== UEFA Euro 1992 Group A {| class="wikitable" style="text-align:center;" |- !width=150|Team !width=20|Pld !width=20|W !width=20|D !width=20|L !width=20|GF !width=20|GA !width=20|GD !width=20|Pts |- bgcolor="#ccffcc" |align="left"|SWE |3||2||1||0||4||2||+2||5 |- bgcolor="#ccffcc" |align="left"|DEN |3||1||1||1||2||2||0||3 |- |align="left"|FRA |3||0||2||1||2||3||-1||2 |- |align="left"|ENG |3||0||2||1||1||2||-1||2 |} {{footballbox |date=1992-06-10 |time=20:15 |team1=SWE |report=(Report) |score=1 – 1 |team2=FRA |goals1=[[Jan Eriksson|J.
