Chin studied musical composition in [[Seoul National University]] with [[Sukhi Kang]], then in Hamburg with [[György Ligeti]], and has adapted much of his musical style into her own. While a student of Ligeti, she won the 1985 [[Gaudeamus International Composers Award]].<ref>{{cite journal|journal=The Musical Times|volume=127|issue=1715|date=January 1986|pages=pp. 40–45|doi=10.2307/965363|title=Reports}}</ref> She uses traditional instruments as well as electronics in her compositions. Her first opera, ''[[Alice in Wonderland (opera)|Alice in Wonderland]]'', received its world premiere on June 30, 2007 at the [[Bavarian State Opera]].
