According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the township has a total area of 68.5 [[square mile]]s (177.4 [[km²]]), of which, 63.2 square miles (163.6 km²) of it is land and 5.3 square miles (13.8 km²) of it (7.77%) is water.
[[Strathmere, New Jersey|Strathmere]] is a [[census-designated place]] and [[unincorporated area (New Jersey)|unincorporated area]] located within Upper Township. [[Marmora, New Jersey|Marmora]] is an unincorporated area within the township. The township contains many different communities and enclaves that create a diverse area reaching from [[Great Egg Harbor]] to the [[Atlantic Ocean]]. Seaville is the largest community and Strathmere is the Township's island containing a beautiful beach community.

As of the [[census]]{{GR|2}} of 2000, there were 12,115 people, 4,266 households, and 3,365 families residing in the township. The [[population density]] was 191.8 people per square mile (74.1/km²). There were 5,472 housing units at an average density of 86.6/sq mi (33.5/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 97.59% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.69% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.12% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.61% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.06% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.19% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.74% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.28% of the population.
There were 4,266 households out of which 39.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.7% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.1% were non-families. 17.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.84 and the average family size was 3.23.
In the township the population was spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $60,942, and the median income for a family was $68,824. Males had a median income of $46,528 versus $31,325 for females.
