URAN : Name of the Goddess "Uranavati", it has been variously called Urvaritavan (in ancient times), Uruvan (during Peshva Madhavrao's reign) and Ooran by British & the portuguese. Mauryas, Chalukyas, Yadavas, Shilahars, Nagarshah, Portuguese, Marathas & British have ruled over Uran through the centuries. Uran is part of the [[Navi Mumbai]] city township and lies in the [[Raigarh district]] near [[Panvel]] and [[Karjat]]. Situated east of [[Mumbai]] across the Thane Creek. In the distance is the city of [[Mumbai]] (obstructed by the glare).]] Uran has a naval base near [[Mora]].
