Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) is the third studio album by American metal band Slipknot. It was released on May 25, 2004 by Roadrunner Records, and a special edition version of the album containing a bonus disc was released on April 12, 2005. It is the first and only album by the band to be produced by Rick Rubin.
After the band ended the tour for its second album in 2002, speculation regarding the future began after some band members exercised side projects including Murderdolls, To My Surprise, and the re-establishment of Stone Sour. However, in 2003, Slipknot moved into The Mansion to work on the album. Initially, the band was unproductive, with lead vocalist Corey Taylor drinking heavily. Nevertheless, they eventually managed to write more than enough material for the new album, releasing five singles. It was the band's first album to incorporate more traditional song structures as well as considerably more melody and acoustic guitars.
The album was met with generally positive reviews. It received a score of 70% on review aggregator Metacritic based on 12 reviews. The album peaked within the top ten in album sales across eleven countries, and went on to become classified Platinum in the United States. The band also received the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for the single "Before I Forget".
Recording and production
Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) was recorded with producer Rick Rubin at The Mansion in Los Angeles, California. Prior to entering The Mansion, speculation regarding the possibility of a third album and the future of the band began when some band members exercised other musical projects. After the album was complete, the band expressed that these side projects "saved the band" and "helped [them] break out of the box [they] were in". In 2003, Slipknot moved in to The Mansion to begin work on their third studio album. The process of coming back together and working out their differences hindered the writing process. ==Musical and lyrical themes==
The musical style of Slipknot is often difficult to pinpoint because of the genres their music covers; however, Vol. 3 is regarded as their most diverse album. Prior to the release of the album, band members promised a more experimental album, with drummer Jordison saying that "it's almost as if Slayer was tapping on Radiohead." For the first time in Slipknot's career, songs such as "Circle" and "Vermilion Pt. 2" were lead by acoustic rather than electric guitar. However, songs such as "Pulse of the Maggots" and "Before I Forget" use the band's usual "pounding metal" style. Other tracks such as "Blister Exists", "Three Nil", and "Opium of the People" combine the two extremes of their recognizable metal edge with melody, with the most apparent shifts being in Taylor's vocal style. Entertainment Weekly added that the album "[bounced] between over-powering speed-metal and haunting acoustic rock".
Vol. 3 was Slipknot's first album that did not warrant a Parental Advisory label because it lacked profanity. In a 2008 interview, guitarist Mick Thomson explained that vocalist Taylor made a point of avoiding the use of profanity in response to people claiming that he relied upon it. The lyrics of Vol. 3 include strong use of metaphors and touches upon themes including anger, disaffection, and psychosis. Taylor's diversity in his vocal delivery was praised; Todd Burns of Stylus Magazine considered that tracks like "Vermilion Pt. 2" include "stately vocal harmonies". Taylor's performance on the closing track "Danger – Keep Away" was specifically praised, with Stylus Magazine calling it the most "depressing and emotional" track on the album. The magazine also concluded that "the riffs have lost none of their impact, but it seems like finally the group also wants you to appreciate their vocal and lyrical impact."
