Lectures and visits
Thomas Blom Hansen, a sociologist at the University of Edinburgh, has written Naik's style of memorizing the Qur'an and hadith literature in various languages, and travelling abroad to debate Islam with theologians, has made him extremely popular in Muslim circles. Although he usually speaks to audiences of several hundreds, it is the videotapes of his talks which are widely distributed. His talks are usually recorded in English, to be broadcast at weekends on several cable networks in Mumbai's Muslim neighborhoods, and on the channel Peace TV, which he co-promotes. Topics he speaks on include: "Islam and Modern Science", "Islam and Christianity", and "Islam and secularism", among others.
Delivering a lecture titled 'Why Westerners embrace Islam' in November 2002 at the at King Fahd Hospital auditorium in Jeddah, Zakir Naik said that Islam offers practical solutions to various problems facing the West such as adultery, alcoholism and filial ingratitude. He said "It is the only religion that speaks to human intelligence, giving good reasoning and logic, and does not encourage blind faith" and that "of more than 6,000 verses in the Holy Qur’an, some 1,000 speak on scientific facts". Naik also noted that despite strident anti-Islam campaigns, 34,000 Americans have embraced Islam from September 2001 to July 2002. To back his words on anti-Islam campaigns he quoted a report published in the Time Magazine which said that about 60,000 books against Islam have been written over the past 150 years alone. On the status of women in Islam, Naik is quoted to have said that "Islam has given them the most respectable position in society. It granted them the right to own property 1,300 years before the West has. In an Islamic society, a woman need not work. It is her husband’s duty to look after her". In his book titled 'Universal Peace: To Unite a Universal Brotherhood', muslim author Mohammed Talib writes that in a similar lecture titled 'Why the West is coming to Islam', Naik lists adultery, surplus women, theft, rape, alcoholism, the concept of Old Age Homes etc. as being some of the problems of the western society, and says that Islam has solutions to all of them. Naik also notes that the western society likes to reason and investigate logic before being convinced about something. It also likes to analyse a theory which has a falsefication test in order to prove it wrong; the Qur'an too has a falsefication test in which says Do they not consider the Qur'an with care, had it been from anyone besides Allah there would have been many contradiction in it and thus argues that in order to prove the Qur'an wrong all one has to do is find a single contradiction inside it. Naik has also delivered a similar lecture at the Kelab Darul Ehsan Club, Kuala Lampur, Malaysia in 1998.
In 2004 Naik visited New Zealand and then Australian capitals at the invitation of Islamic Information and Services Network of Australasia. In his conference in Melbourne; according to journalist Sushi Das, "Naik extolled the moral and spiritual superiority of Islam and lampooned other faiths and the West in general", adding that Naik's words "fostered a spirit of separateness and reinforced prejudice". Das also noted that "In Australia, where young Muslims are also searching for identity, a separation mentality is fuelled when radical overseas speakers (like Naik) spout ill-informed rhetoric" and that "It does nothing to develop harmony."
On August 20, 2006 in lecture at an event titled 'Call to Humanity' held at MEN Arena in Manchester, Naik challenged media definitions of terrorism by saying When the IRA started their bombing campaign, did we hear the media using Catholic terrorism? So why does the international media have a campaign on Islamic terrorism? He also said ""There is no such thing as Muslim terrorism because a true Muslim cannot be a terrorist. A true Muslim does not go around killing innocent people. In Islam, killing one innocent Muslim is like killing all of humanity." and that the word fundamentalism has also been used negatively to describe Muslims.
In September 2006, delivering a lecture at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) auditorium in Jeddah, Naik explained that terrorism is not a Muslim monopoly and quoting established historical records showed how the assumption after the 7/11 Mumbai train bombings that "not all Muslims are terrorists but all terrorists are Muslim" was untrue. He said that associating killing only with Islam is incorrect and quoted other religious scriptures (including a quotation from the Book of Numbers in the Bible) to prove that other religions too ascribe capital punishment for apostasy. Naik is also quoted as having said "This is a media conspiracy and a way of pushing people away from Islam. In every religion there are black sheep and the media keep putting these people forward," <br />
Political Analyst Khaled Ahmed considers that Zakir Naik, by his claims of Islam's superiority over other religious faiths, practices what he calls "reverse Orientalism". Once when Naik was asked whether the destruction of the monumental Buddhas of Bamyan by radical Muslims in Afganistan was justified; he replied that there were no Buddhists in Afghanistan and the territory belonged to the Afghans, so they were right in destroying their own property. Then when asked if Kaaba was similarly located what could the Muslims do if it was destroyed, he replied that under Islam images were banned and gave the example of opium by saying "What if all the opium-takers protested that a country had destroyed large stocks of opium?"
During an interview Naik was asked why non-Muslims were not allowed to preach their religion in Islamic states like Saudi Arabia. Naik quoted verse 3:85 from the Qur'an and said that "...as far as the matters of religion are concerned we know for sure that only Islam is the true religion in the eyes of God. In Qur'an 3:85 it is mentioned that God will never accept any religion other than Islam. As far as the second question regarding building of churches or temples is concerned, how can we allow this when their religion is wrong and when their worshipping is wrong? Therefore, we will not allow such wrong things in our Islamic country." Zakir Naik has allegedly also said that it is blasphemous for Muslims to wish Christians a "Happy Christmas", as it acknowledges Jesus as a son of God. Naik has also emphasized on the importance of Muslims maintaining a beard and moustache. Indian author Khushwant Singh however feels Naik sports a goatee.
Khushwant Singh believes that Naik's pronouncements are 'juvenile' and said that "they seldom rise above the level of undergraduate college debates". Singh replied to Zakir Naik's statement that "Western society claims to have uplifted women. On the contrary, it has actually degraded them to the status of concubines, mistresses, and society butterflies who are mere tools in the hands of pleasure seekers and sex marketers…." by saying "Dr. Naik, you know next to nothing about the Western society and are talking through your skull cap. People like you are making the Muslims lag behind other communities." Singh also noted that Naik's audiences "... listen to him with rapt attention and often explode in enthusiastic applause when he rubbishes other religious texts ..." Journalist Aataai Gazi Mahbub has questioned whether Naik's Peace TV truly encourages interfaith amity or pride in one's own religion.
In a lecture at Melbourne University, Naik argued that only Islam, gave women true equality. He extolled on the importance of the headscarf by arguing that revealing "Western" dress makes women more susceptible to rape. Naik said that "There are two sisters, equally beautiful, and they are walking down the streets of Melbourne. One is wearing the Islamic hijab, the complete body cover, except hands and face, and the other sister is wearing Western clothes, the mini-skirt or shorts, and around the corner, there is an anti-social element, who is waiting for a catch, who is waiting to tease the girl. I'm asking the question: which girl will he tease? Quite naturally, he will tease the girl wearing the Western clothes." Naik also said that about 2700 rapes took place daily in the United States. Under Islam, he said, a man who raped a woman was to be punished with the death penalty. In another lecture titled 'Universal Brotherhood' at Bhiwandi, Mumbai, he was also of the opinion that If you implement the Islamic Shariah in America that is, every man when he looks at a woman, he should lower his gaze, the woman should be properly dressed up in the Hijab and after that, if any man rapes – Capital punishment. I am asking you a question 'will the rate of rape increase, will it remain the same, or will it decrease?' He then said I have been asking this question to Non-Muslims that 'Suppose someone rapes (unfortunately) your wife, or your mother, and if you are made the Judge and if the rapist is brought in front of you what punishment will you give?’ And believe me all of them said "We will put him to death". Some went to the extent of saying "We will torture him to death". So why do you have these double standards? Someone rapes somebody else’s wife, Capital punishment is barbaric law. Someone rapes your wife you want to give him Capital punishment. Why these double standards? He also quoted India's leading tabloid, The Times of India on October 20, 1998 as having reported the then Home Minister of India, L.K. Advani's putting a death rap for rapes, and recommending an amendment in the law.
Following a controversial lecture on Islam by Pope Benedict XVI in September 2006, in which the pope quoted an argument made by the Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos: "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." The pope later apologized for his statements, however Zakir Naik described the Pope's comments as "completely baseless” and not befitting the leader of the Catholic Church" and rejected the apology commenting that "...The Pope`s apology to the Muslims was at all not an apology rather it was putting salt on the wounds." Naik then went on to say that he was ready for an open and public debate with Pope Benedict XVI under live international TV coverage and also stated that he wouldn't mind going to Rome on his own expense if he was provided with an Italian visa. The Pope did not react to the call, and in 2008 Naik scheduled to tour Italy himself, lecturing in Rome, Brescia and Milan between July 11 to 15..
In November 2007, the IRF organized a 10-day international Islamic conference and exhibition titled The Peace Conference at the Somaiya grounds in Mumbai. Lectures on Islam were presented by Naik as well as twenty other speakers. During one of the lectures, Naik provoked anger amongst the Shia and Sunni communities at the conference when he mentioned the words “Radiallah ta'la anho” (meaning 'May Allah be pleased with him') after mentioning the name of Yazid I and made remarks that Karbala was a political battle. Others although believed the comment was blown out of proportion and on being asked about the incident in an interview by Saudi Arabia's leading tabloid, the Saudi Gazette, he replied "...My remark about Yazeed was misunderstood and hence the controversy.
