Staten Island Ferry Disaster
On July 30, 1871, a boiler explosion onboard the Westfield,
a Staten Island ferryboat, killed 125 passengers.
Jacob Vanderbilt, the president of the Staten Island Ferry, was charged with homicide,
but later acquitted.
Perrette Uhlmann was on board with her husband, children and family from Switzerland.
She was the only one of that group to survive.
