Notities

From Jan Petrak Posting

I have Erastus Burk born 1816 in Darlington Township, Durham County, Ontario Canada. This is near Bowmanville, Ontario. He was the son of John Burk II 1785-1832 and Jane Brisbin Nov 1790-1866. John Burk II was the son of John Burk the pioneer. John Burk II died of typhoid at a young age. Nov. 8, 1832. Several members of the family suffered the disease as well. John and Jane had two known children, Eunice and Erastus. I have no dates for Eunice. I have information that she married a Fisher. Erastus left the Darlington township farm. Erastus married Mathilda Turner. She was born about 1824. Erastus farmed in Darlington Township and moved to Blenheim sometime before 1858. Blenheim Business Directory lists him as owning a General Store. In 1869, he either sold or turned over the store to his son-in-law Nathan Stevens and his daughter Ada Burk. Erastus moved to California and became a successful fruit grower. Erastus and Mathilda had five children. Frederick Lester Burk who became a doctor, he was an author, president of SanFranscico State University and noted as one of the seven top educators in North America in his time. Ada Jane Burk married her cousin Nathan Stevens. She is discussed prior. Ada and Nathan had 9 children. Mirette or Marietta was born 1845 and married Senator Archibald Campbell. Her first name very well could have been Eunice as she had an aunt named Eunice. Mirette is listed as being 16 years old in the 1861 Census. Archibald Campbell was a miller at Morpeth, Ontario. Becoming Federal Member of Parliament, Senator and descended Maude Campbell who married Spencer STone who owned the Spencer Department Store on King St., Chatham, Ontario. This couple had a son, the Hon. Thomas Archibald Stone who served in External Affairs and was Ambassador to the Netherlands. They also had a son, the prominent Dr. Robert Spencer STone.

Julia Burk was born 1850 and Isabella was born 1853. no further info on these children.

The Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid shows an Erastus Burk buried at Bomanville
