For his parents, he finished his medical studies at the age of 22 but the scenic art and the cinema had already attract him. As a teenager, he had made two shorts with Michel Brault. In 1953, he wrote a scenario for the television. Entered at the Office national du film du Canada in 1954. After his first feature in 1958 went in France and work with François Truffaut and Jean Rouch. In the sixties he is involved in the 'cinema direct' movement. In 1971, it's Mon oncle Antoine (1971) his masterpiece cited has one of the best canadian movies. From the mid-seventies, he works in Toronto where he can get an easier financing. Overtaken by the Alzheimer desease he end his life as his character in À tout prendre (1964), drowning himself in the St-Lawrence River. Since 1999, the cinema Quebecois salute him each year by rewarding the best film in the province with a statuette called Jutra (the equivalent of an oscar in Quebec). http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claude_Jutra
